Two days ago, it was everything since 2012! The only variable that changes is how many messages disappear. Then later today, or perhaps tomorrow, the cycle will start over. At some point today, all messages will be restored. I've been through this cycle at least a dozen times in the last week. I get about 30 to 50 emails a day, so where did they all go? Well, if you look at the progress bar, you can see that Mail is redownloading thousands of messages.
For example, right now, Mail shows the last email I received was in July 2015. Typically, the messages disappear from a particular date to the present. My email provider is GoDaddy and it's an IMAP account. Messages in Mail have recently been disappearing by the thousands, then redownloading from the server.
